Two Halloween Pennant Dragonflies in tandem in a North Carolina marsh.
I grew up around water and loved watching the dragonflies and damselflies. They are masters of flight and living ornaments of art and when captured in detail on print. I can look at them for hours on print but I love to watch them in real time.
To get shots like this Im using my SB800 flash mounted on my camera and with a soft box over the flash. Using a strobe is key when trying to obtain detailed sharpness in dragonfly photography. The flash will stop motion as much as it can while dragons are in flight and will produce tack sharp images when dragons are resting on something even if there is a bit of wind motion. The flash will also provide much needed fill light for contrasty sunny conditions.
This newest set of dragons are the sharpest and most detailed photographs I have ever taken of dragonflies. They would make for some cool t-shirts.
